Jay Riley Quartet Live at St. Marks - Midnight Mood by Joe Zawinul
Jay Riley - Carelessly Happy
“...interesting compositions with a strong direction...blowing with a super phat sound.”
“From Zoot to Clarence Clemons, John Coltrane to Jean Toussaint, there isn’t a black belt of ‘saxophony’ I won’t listen to. Jay Riley’s no exception.”
As Riley’s background would suggest the music, which is largely comprised of Riley originals, covers a variety of jazz styles from the straight-ahead to funk and fusion. In his writing Riley has attempted to cover a wide range of emotions with the emphasis very much on ‘light and shade’.
I started my career in 2001 playing saxophone with The Dr Teeth Big Band and was signed to Big Bear records. I toured the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Norway and Chicago and recorded 2 albums with the Teeth. I have been luck enough to share stages with artists such as McFly, Billy Cobham, the Count Basie Orchestra, Roy Ayers, Kyle Eastwood, Robert Plant and Chaz & Dave! I continue to tour and record as a freelance session musician and I now have my own quartet.
As an educator I have worked in almost all educational settings. I have taught class, individual, workshops, summer schools; worked in private, state secondary, FE and some HE. I have also been invited to present workshops for schools nationally and in the States. In Feb 2003 I was selected for a music education exchange in Lviv, Ukraine
